Claim: A video shows scenes from the 2024 Notting Hill Carnival where eight people were stabbed.

Fact: The video is from September 2022 when hundreds of people were caught in a crush on Ladbroke Grove during the Notting Hill Carnival of that year.

On 26 August, X user @visegrad24 posted (archive) a video apparently showing scenes from the 2024 Notting Hill Carnival that was held from 24 August to 26 August. The caption says: “3 people stabbed in separate incidents on the first day of the annual Notting Hill Carnival in London.” The video alongside the post implies that it shows scenes from this year’s festival.

Eight people were indeed stabbed during the Notting Hill Carnival in west London, held from 24 August to 26 August, according to the Metropolitan Police. 349 were arrested, including the 20-year-old Shakiel Thibou, who was charged on Wednesday with the attempted murder of 32-year-old Cher Maximen, who is reportedly in a coma now.

Approximately one million people were expected to attend the event this year, according to the BBC. Notting Hill Carnival is an African Caribbean festival, Europe’s largest street event, held every year since the 1960s.

Fact or Fiction?

Soch Fact Check reverse-searched keyframes from the video and found that it is actually from 2022.

Daily Mail’s article from September 2022 published photos and a video of the Notting Hill Carnival, showing crowds of people and the police moving in opposite directions. The first picture matches a frame from the viral video at the 0:04 timestamp. The second picture matches the moment at timestamp 0:09.

Similar to the video in the claim, the footage included in the Daily Mail’s article, depicted the chaos as people were crushed together, desperately trying to escape the overcrowded area.

A longer video of the incident by The Mirror, shared on Facebook in August 2022, showed people screaming while trying to escape, and matches the video in the claim at the 0:11 until the 0:22 mark.

Soch Fact Check also found the same video on Dailymotion, published by National World in 2022 which confirmed that it is not from this year’s carnival.

The crushing occurred due to poor crowd management at the time, according to witnesses. However, a local who had recorded footage of the overcrowding said that there was “sufficient crowd control,” adding that it was an isolated event.

Virality

The video on X garnered 156,200 views and was liked 2,300 times.

Conclusion: The video does not show scenes from the 2024 Notting Hill Carnival where eight people were stabbed. It is from the 2022 Notting Hill Carnival when the police and people attending the festival were caught in a crush in an overcrowded area.
