On 18 July 2024, Threads user @iqra_nawaz posted a black and white photo of Amitabh Bachchan, the photo included text that read, “Amitabh Bachan peacefully passed by a house today in Juhu, Mumbai”. The post was captioned, “🥹😓🙏”.
While the post states that Bachhan “peacefully passed” explicitly indicating that he died, the post apparently does not claim that the actor is dead. However, multiple people in the comments section were misled by the initial part of the phrase “Amitabh Bachan peacefully passed by”, and left comments believing the actor has passed away.
The user also responded to a comment under the post, clarifying that, “He is alive….. Read that message carefully.”
Fact or Fiction?
Soch Fact Check conducted a keyword search including the words, “Amitabh Bachchan passed peacefully” however no results were found. We also failed to find news outlets, mainstream or otherwise, that had reported on the passing of the actor.
On the contrary, Bachchan has been in the news recently as he is starring in the latest Indian Telugu science fiction film, Kalki 2898 AD. An interview of the actor was published on YouTube on 18 July 2024, the same day the viral claim of his passing was posted. It was published by the official YouTube handle of Vyjayanthi Movies, the production house that produced Kalki 2898 AD, a 2024 Indian Telugu science fiction film. The Hindustan Times reported the odd nature of the interview including how defensive Bachchan was of the film’s writing in his interview. The article noted that the actor “seems to be obsessed with Nag Ashwin’s Telugu dystopian sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD”, and that, “In the episode, Amitabh is seen defending Prabhas’ introductory scenes.”
He has also been in the news recently owing to a reportedly “cryptic” blog post he wrote on his official Tumblr account on 13 July 2024. As reported in The Hindustan Times he wrote, “Back from a glorious wedding and the feel after a very long time of public exposure, the wealth of love and affection that I can possibly think of with so many old acquaintances .. they seemed to have changed in their physiognomy, but extremely sincere in their affection towards the association and the love of our times well spent together.”
To further verify the viral claim, Soch Fact Check looked up Bachchan’s official Tumblr blog but found no announcement of his passing. Bachchan himself regularly updates the blog and his latest post was written on 22 July 2024, days after the claim of his death was posted further verifying that he has not passed. The actor’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, which is also regularly updated with the same posts as the blog, was last updated with a post on 21 July 2024.
Thus Soch Fact Check finds the claim to be misleading.
