Claim: Babar Azam was offered 90 crore Rupees by Mukesh Ambani to attend his son Anant Ambani’s wedding.

Fact: The claim is false. It originated from a satirical post and was later misinterpreted and spread as factual information.

On 15 July 2024, social media users, including Threads user ‘noor_hussain_khann’ and the Facebook page ‘Muhajir Community’, claimed that Pakistani cricketer Babar Azam received an offer of 90 crore Rupees from business tycoon Mukesh Ambani to attend his son Anant Ambani’s wedding. This claim has been circulating since 3 March 2024.

Mukesh Ambani is an Indian business tycoon, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a Fortune Global 500 company and India’s biggest company by market value. Ambani has consistently ranked among the world’s wealthiest individuals and has influenced India’s business landscape. His son, Anant Ambani’s lavish wedding celebrations have been reported on widely.

Fact or Fiction?

Soch Fact Check investigated and found no credible evidence or official confirmation of such an offer. There are no reputable news organisations or official confirmations that substantiate the claim.

Through a Google search of the string “Mukesh Ambani Babar Azam”, Soch Fact Check found the claim originated on 3 March 2024, from a satirical post by the Indian meme page @being_humour, which jokingly stated, “Mukesh Ambani offered Babar Azam 10 crore to attend his son’s wedding but he rejected the offer. He said the sum of money is too big to exist.” The joke played on the absurdity of the offer, suggesting that such a large sum of money is unrealistically high. This means the claim began as satire, explicitly intended to be humorous and not taken seriously.

Soch Fact Check surveyed the posts making the claim on X, and found that a majority of posts which made the claim on 3 March 2024, when it first appeared online, had a satirical caption.

Subsequent posts with variations on this joke followed, all maintaining a humorous tone, with different punchlines emphasising the humour. For example, one version suggested that Azam asked Ambani for packaged flour to prove his wealth, while another humorously claimed that Azam declined the offer because he didn’t want to earn more than Pakistan’s GDP.

However, as the posts circulated, the satirical context was lost. By the time the posts being fact-checked in this article were published on 15 July, it was presented without the original humorous context, leading many to believe it was a factual statement.

Soch Fact Check also spoke to the talent management company which manages Babar Azam’s PR and marketing campaigns, Saya Corps. Zahid Saya told us that Babar Azam was never offered a sum of money to attend the wedding of Mukesh Ambani’s son, he was never extended an invitation to the wedding. We also directly spoke to his agent, who confirmed the same.

To address the misinformation, Waleed Rauf, a prominent sports vlogger, analysed the claim on his official TikTok page. Rauf directly debunked the rumour, stating that sources close to Babar Azam confirmed no such offer was ever made by Mukesh Ambani. This aligns with the lack of any credible news reports or official statements supporting the claim.

Virality

The false claim has gained significant traction on social media. On Facebook, the claim received over 63,000 likes and 25,000 comments. It was also posted here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.

The claim was also published on Threads and X, where it received thousands of views and interactions.

Conclusion: The claim that Babar Azam was offered 90 crore Rupees by Mukesh Ambani to attend his son’s wedding is false. It originated from a satirical post and was later misinterpreted and spread as factual information.
