Claim: A video is circulating that claims to show that Pakistani religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel’s clothing store sells ‘western’ clothes.
Fact: Maulana Tariq Jameel’s store outlet does not sell ‘western’ clothes. The shop that can be seen in the video is next to an outlet of the scholar’s clothing brand.
On 28th April 2022, a video showing an outlet of Islamic scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel’s clothing brand in a local mall was posted on Facebook with the caption طارق جمیل صاحب کی شاپنگ سینٹر …(shopping center of Tariq Jameel Sahib). The video was also shared with other captions such as مولانا طارق جمیل صاحب کی شاپنگ سینٹر مبارک.. (Congratulations to Maulana Tariq Jameel Sahib’s Shopping Center).
The audio in the video suggests that the preacher’s store is stocking and selling clothes that the person filming deems ‘western.’ While some social media users pointed out that the video was misleading, others left comments attacking Jameel for allegedly selling these clothes at his store.
Fact or Fiction
Soch Fact Check found the claim to be false. The clip shows Jameel’s store MTJ, as well as another neighboring store, which is separate from Jameel’s clothing store.
Jameel’s store does not in fact sell western clothes. The video might have been intended to suggest Jameel sells clothes that are in some way inappropriate or otherwise out of step with his religious beliefs and teachings.
Virality
This video shared by Facebook user ‘Akbar Keliwal’ was viewed 70, 000 times and appeared here as well. It was posted here on Twitter and received nearly 2,000 views.
Conclusion: Jameel’s store does not sell the clothing articles shown in the viral video. The selected footage only captures the front side of the store and records the left side of another store, which sells a different variety of clothes.
