Claim: A video shows a family of five was swept away in a flash flood in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Fact: The video is not related to the 2022 floods in Pakistan but is, in fact, from Patalpani, Indore in India. It shows at least three relatives being washed away in a sudden flow of water in Patalpani in July 2011.
Fact or Fiction?
On 26 August 2022, Twitter user Imran Wahid shared a video claiming that it shows a family being washed away by floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
“خیبرپختونخوا ، سیلابی ریلہ پوری فیملی کو بہا لے گیا [In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the flood swept away the entire family],” his tweet reads.
Soch Fact Check found the claim to be misleading after coming across a reply from Twitter user Yasir (@Yasirahmatpti). He shared screenshots which suggest that the incident took place in Patalpani, Indore in India.
A Google search with keywords “Patalpani accident indore” led us to an article by the Times of India published on 13 July 2017. The article states that “three members of a family were washed away in a sudden flow of water in Patalpani while they were on a pleasure excursion, without any hint of the disaster waiting them” on 17 July 2011.
Another Twitter user shared a longer version of the video in the replies calling out Wahid for misleading people. The video titled “Waterfall incident in India sweeps family into the water” by WildFilmsIndia can be found on YouTube here.
This video is being shared in Pakistan in light of devastating floods which have taken the lives of around 1,000 people and “badly affected” 30 million, forcing the government to declare a national emergency.

Conclusion: The video does not show a family in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa being swept away by 2022 floods in Pakistan. In fact, it depicts the Patalpani tragedy in Indore, India due to which at least three members of a family lost their lives in July 2011.
