Claim: Former finance minister for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Taimur Saleem Khan Jaghra was shot and shifted to a hospital.

Fact: The claim is false, as Jaghra himself confirmed in a post on his X account confirming that he is fine and that the news on social media is fake.

Elections 2024

Pakistan’s general elections were held on 8 February 2024. Protests have erupted across the country following allegations of widespread rigging during the general election, which were levelled by Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other political groups. With no clear winner declared yet, the country is in turmoil as multiple parties have laid claim to the government.

The security situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains volatile as violent attacks continued in these regions on election campaigns, polling stations and post-election protests in which two people have been reported dead.

Fact or Fiction?

On 14 February 2024, a user on X (formerly Twitter) posted a picture (archive) of former finance minister KP and PTI’s candidate, Taimoor Saleem Khan Jaghra, with the Urdu caption,

سابق وزیر خزانہ تیمور خان جھگڑا پر فائرنگ زخمی حالت میں ہسپتال منتقل کر دیا گیا، اللہ خیر کرے

[Translation: Ex-Finance Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra was shot and transferred to the hospital. May God bless him]

To investigate, Soch Fact Check contacted journalist Sheraz Ahmed, in Peshawar, who verified no such attack occurred.

Later the same day, Taimur Jaghra posted a clarification on his X account, confirming that he is fine and at home, requesting people not to spread false rumours.

PTI Khyer Pakhtunkhwa also debunked the false news on their verified Facebook account in a Pashto audio message. In the message, Jaghra can be heard saying that he is fine and the news about the attack is false.

Virality

The false news about the attack on Taimur Jaghra received 10,000 views, 700 likes and 250 reposts.

The false claim was shared on Facebook here, here, and here.

Conclusion: News of an attack on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s former finance minister, Taimur Saleem Khan Jaghra, is false.
